About Wuhan Textile University
Address: No. 1 Yangguang Avenue, Jiangxia District, Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China
Wuhan Textile University (WTU) is a key participant in China's "Basic Capacity Construction Project for Universities in Central and Western China," the "Program of Introducing Talents of Discipline Innovation to Universities" (111 Plan), and the "Outstanding Engineers Education and Training Plan." It is designated as a key institution under Hubei Province’s "Domestic First-Class Discipline" construction scheme and recognized as one of China's top ten fashion design universities. Formerly known as Wuhan Institute of Textile Technology (founded in 1958), the institution was renamed Wuhan University of Science and Technology in 1999. Following consecutive mergers with Hubei Foreign Trade School and Hubei Finance and Economics College, it officially adopted the name Wuhan Textile University in 2010.
Aiming to build a high-level university with distinctive characteristics, WTU has established a modern university governance framework based on theCharter of Wuhan Textile University. Guided by its motto "Seeking Truth, Cherishing Beauty; Action Driven, Vision Led" and the university spirit "Self-Reliance, Weaving the World," WTU commits to distinctive development and global openness. It advances innovation across talent cultivation, scientific research, community service, cultural preservation, and international cooperation, having evolved into a comprehensive university centered on engineering, with harmonious multi-disciplinary development spanning engineering, science, art, economics, management, literature, law, and interdisciplinary studies.
WTU follows the developmental strategy of "Pioneering in One Core, Advancing in Multiple Areas, Highlighting Distinctive Features, and Developing Synergistically." The university comprises five academic divisions, 22 schools/departments, and three research institutes. It offers two primary doctoral degree programs, 16 primary master's degree programs, and 15 professional master's degree categories. WTU houses eight key primary disciplines, five distinctive disciplines, and three special discipline clusters in Hubei Province. Its Textile Science and Engineering discipline was selected as a key first-class discipline in Hubei provincial universities and ranked 2nd globally in the ShanghaiRanking's Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). Three disciplines—Materials Science, Chemistry, and Engineering—rank in the top 1% of the global ESI rankings.
WTU actively pursues a strategy of strengthening the university through talent acquisition, dedicating itself to building a high-quality faculty. Out of its 2,400 staff members, over 1,600 are full-time faculty members. This includes one academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, one foreign academician of the Russian Academy of Engineering, and one fellow of the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA), all developed internally. The university boasts nearly 30 national-level high-caliber talents and approximately 300 provincial-level talents. Its "Advanced Manufacturing and Textile Equipment Faculty Team" was honored as a "Huang Danian-style Teacher Team" among Chinese universities.
Vigorously developing "New Engineering" and "New Liberal Arts" programs, WTU focuses on cultivating high-quality, innovative talents with all-round development. The university currently enrolls nearly 27,000 full-time students across 68 undergraduate majors. These include four national feature majors, 17 national first-class undergraduate majors, five majors certified by the Ministry of Education (MOE) for engineering education, eight majors under the "Outstanding Engineers Plan," seven Hubei brand majors, and 16 provincial first-class majors. WTU features national-level teaching teams and experimental zones for innovation in talent cultivation models, hosting 23 national first-class courses, six national open top-quality courses, one New Engineering research and practice project, and two New Liberal Arts research and practice projects. It has won two National Teaching Achievement Awards and 31 grand and first-class provincial/ministerial teaching achievement awards.
Centering on student development, WTU continuously refines its student support systems, enhancing students' innovation, practical skills, and comprehensive qualities. Students have won 32 national awards in the "Challenge Cup" competition—including two Special Prizes and one Gold Award in the main track—and earned the national "Winner Cup" for two consecutive years. The university was named a National Outstanding Unit in the "Go to the Countryside" Summer Social Practice Program, securing 31 provincial honors. It won two Gold Awards and one Outstanding Project Award in the China Youth Volunteer Service Project Competition, with six volunteer teams recognized as provincial "Benyu Volunteer Teams." Twelve students were named "Stars of Self-Improvement Among Chinese College Students" by the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League. The graduate employment rate exceeds 94%, with employment quality consistently ranking among the highest among provincial universities in Hubei.
WTU deeply integrates into national and regional innovation systems. As the lead institution, it houses the State Key Laboratory of New Textile Materials and Advanced Processing Technologies, along with state-local joint engineering laboratories, MOE key laboratories, MOE engineering research centers, and the National Fine Traditional Chinese Culture Inheritance Base for Higher Education Institutions. It has undertaken over 1,000 national projects, including National Key R&D Programs, National Natural Science Foundation projects, and National Social Science Foundation projects, demonstrating strong advantages in textiles, dyeing, apparel, and innovative design. The university has secured one First Prize and three Second Prizes of the State Scientific and Technological Progress Award, two Second Prizes of the State Technological Invention Award, and one Second Prize and two Third Prizes of the Outstanding Achievement Award in Humanistic and Social Sciences for Higher Education Institutions, alongside over 10 works selected for the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. Prioritizing tech transfer, WTU ranks among the top provincial universities in technology service contract revenue, successfully implementing industry-university-research projects across more than 10 provinces to yield substantial economic and social benefits.
WTU actively promotes internationalized education. It is an authorized host institution for Chinese Government Scholarship recipients, the first mainland Chinese member of the AUTEX (Association of Universities for Textiles), a council member of both The Textile Institute (UK) and The Fiber Society (US), and a local cooperation university of the China-CEEC Higher Education Institutions Consortium. The university houses the MOE’s first industry-specific Sino-Foreign People-to-People Exchange Research Institute and Hubei's first undergraduate Sino-foreign joint institute—the Birmingham Fashion and Creative Institute. It conducts joint undergraduate programs with Bunka Gakuen University (Japan), joint doctoral programs with universities in the United States, Russia, and Australia, and long-term partnerships with nearly 200 renowned universities worldwide. Currently, it hosts over 500 international students from 64 countries and regions. As a organizer of foreign assistance projects for the Ministry of Commerce, WTU has hosted 115 training programs, providing training to around 3,200 government officials and technical staff from nearly 100 countries.
"Seeking Truth, Cherishing Beauty with a Clear Goal; Action Driven, Vision Led with No Shortcuts." Looking to the future, guided by Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, WTU will fully implement the Party's educational policy, fulfill the fundamental task of fostering virtue through education, focus on the "Double First-Class" construction target, and strive unitedly to make greater contributions to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
